Tour 51.  Nordhordland - the roundtrip

From heroic legend to oil industry.

Austrheim district: lies in the far north-west of Hordaland, with its distinctive heather moors. In the Viking Age moors like these were to be found all along the coast of Europe - from Norway to Portugal. Vardetangen - the westernmost point of mainland Norway lies in Austrheim.

Lindås district: a fjord and coastal municipality. Pass through the picturesque Alverstraumen sound towards Feste - the ideal summer haven for boating tourists - en route to the Heather Moorland Centre at Lygra where cultural history will be kept alive and communicated. You can go for an exciting stroll in the world's northern-most beech wood, which has existed since the Viking Age.
