Tour 51. Nordhordland - the roundtrip
From heroic legend to oil industry.

Austrheim district: lies in the far north-west of Hordaland, with its distinctive heather moors. In the Viking Age moors like these were to be found all along the coast of Europe - from Norway to Portugal. Vardetangen - the westernmost point of mainland Norway lies in Austrheim.
Lindås district: a fjord and coastal municipality. Pass through the picturesque Alverstraumen sound towards Feste - the ideal summer haven for boating tourists - en route to the Heather Moorland Centre at Lygra where cultural history will be kept alive and communicated. You can go for an exciting stroll in the world's northern-most beech wood, which has existed since the Viking Age.


Tour 51. Nordhordland - the walks
51E: The Stone Age Path–Radøy
An Social History ramble through an area where people have lived since the early stone age, some 9.000–10.000 years ago.
Alternative I:
Walk from Straume quay to the highest point in Rappeneset, about 2 km.
Terrain: Path
Time: 1 hour.
Alternative II:
Walk along the Fosnstraum towards Ramvikneset and the brigde. A short diversion to Bøneset, especially if you’re found of fishing. This is a short walk – 15-20 minutes – but you should take time to study the old settlements and the Fosnstraum.


51F: Fosnstraumen – Austrheim
A well marked walk in Hoplandsmarka along Fosnstraumen and the southerly part of Hoplandsosen, taking you back to the time when stone-age man established his settlements some 9,000 -10,000 years ago.
Terrain: The route is well marked and follows both wooded pathways and prepared footpaths.
Time: 1. Approx. 1 1/2 hours.


51K: Vardetangen – Austrheim
The route takes you through natural scenery north-west of Fonnes and leads to Vardetangen, the western-most mainland point in Norway. (4° 56" 43, 182 East).
